THE HONITON GUIDE HONITON MEMORIES. BOAR WAR
Good day from Durban, I'm an amateur historian specialising in the siege & relief of Ladysmith during the Boer war. During many years of research I've accumulated thousands of names, in the main British dead, & have compiled a database listing this info; my list now extends to ALL known dead as opposed to the original Ladysmith portion. I have added a column to my database for monuments as I believe that a man giving his life for his country deserves to be remembered somewhere & to this end hope to establish a monument entry for all the dead.

I understand from the Imperial War Museum website there is a memorial to the British dead at the Allhallows Museum(Chapel inside Church ), please would it be possible for someone to supply me with a list of the names?

I am always prepared to search my database for anyone looking for their relative who died in the war.

Regards
Brian Kaighin

Honiton Memories – The Locals Reflect “The Way It Was”

Shirley with book

A fascinating and delightful book containing a collection of stories as told by some of the local residents living in the historic market town of Honiton. This is a rare and nostalgic insight as to how people lived and faired, with their memories captured for posterity of the years 1930 to 1965. Ordinary people living respectable lives in a time when society was not the ‘throw away society of today’.

Have we forgotten that not so long ago a visit to the toilet meant putting on your shoes and coat and trudging down to the bottom of the garden? One contributor comments about the outside toilet being simply a seat with a hole, and the toilet paper was newspaper torn to size and pierced with a wire which was fastened to the wall. Not the fluffy luxury we have today! I’m sure some of you remember this all to well.

I wonder how many people are up at their rabbit traps by 5am, taking back the catch for grandmother to skin and joint! Then sell the skins for sixpence a time, which were then turned into furs. This was before starting the daily job! Holidays, if possible, were a luxury, and normally only occurred if you were lucky enough to have friends or relatives who lived near the seaside. Alternatively you would swim in the local river............that was until the medical officer of health proclaimed it to be dangerous, because there was a chance of catching typhoid!

‘Honiton Memories’ is an intriguing book that when reflected upon begs the question, ‘Is life better or worse today?’ Are the priorities we set ourselves in today’s world misguided?

If you are guilty of politely informing the younger generation just how easy they have it today, and your comments are met with a roll of the eyes and an unbelieving sigh, then ‘Honiton Memories’ is a valuable asset in supporting your woes and frustrations.
