Sid Valleys Rally For Sally

A local charity event to help some great causes, FORCE cancer charity and the Childrens Hospice South West. The mission is to celebrate the life of a very special member of the community, Sally Roberts, by raising as much money as possible for these charities.

Sally was the head teacher at St Peter’s School, Budleigh Salterton in Devon. Unfortunately, ill health forced her early retirement in October 2010. She was married to Jeremy, the principal of Sidmouth College. These are Jeremy’s words, taken from our local Newspaper “Sally was someone who took great joy in life and was able to show enormous love, not just to her family, but in all her relationships. Her life was those relationships. To us, the cancer was a dance and we were trying to keep a couple of steps ahead. Eventually, it caught up,” He also added that his wife of nearly 30 years not only leaves her own family - but hundreds of children she treated as if her own in the communities she served.

What's going to be happening?

There is going to be an event at the Sidmouth Rugby Club kicking off at 2pm until late. Honiton Jubilee Celebrations 2012

After much planning and the involvement of many organisations from across the community, Honiton is now putting the final touches to its plans to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in June, with something going on every one of the four days of the bank holiday weekend and beyond.

Union flags are already flying throughout the town, thanks to the work of the Chamber of Commerce. These flags will stay up throughout the summer and bring the Jubilee celebrations into the heart of the High Street. Plans are also in place to bring a red, white and blue theme to flowerbeds and hanging baskets.

On Thursday 19 April at 4pm the town’s Jubilee Oak will be planted in the Millennium Green by the Deputy Mayor, Cllr David Foster. The tree is one donated by the Woodland Trust to Honiton Community College’s Eco-Council and given to the Town Council by Transition Town Honiton. It will be marked by a plaque commemorating the Jubilee and available for everyone to visit in the beautiful Millennium Green.

On Saturday 2 June the street market will be taking on a Jubilee theme and also running a promotion to win a hamper of goods donated and sponsored by the traders.

In the afternoon there will be two events to suit all ages:

The Senior Citizens Centre will be open to all its members for a tea party which will include a slide show of 60 years in Honiton (courtesy of Allhallows Museum) and everyone will be able to follow the national celebrations on a wide screen television.

At the same time in the afternoon, at both St Pauls and the Baptist churches, there will be free of charge Family Tea Parties on the forecourts, including children’s activities.

In the evening of the Saturday, Hospiscare will be holding a Supper Evening in the Mackarness Hall, including interlude music. Tickets will be available for £8.50.

Moving to Sunday 3 June, Allhallows Field will be the venue for Honiton’s Big Lunch. This “bring your own” event is being co-ordinated by local residents and with the help of the Rugby Club, who are opening up their facilities for the afternoon. All are welcome to bring a picnic, listen to the music and join in the fun.

On the Sunday evening St Paul’s church will be holding a Celebratory Evensong. All are welcome to join in this act of worship to give thanks for the Queen and all her work for the country over the past 60 years.

Turning to Monday 4 June, the focus turns again to Allhallows Field, where Honiton Running Club will be organising a sports event for children. All youth organisations, and individuals, are welcome to join in.

On Tuesday 5 June we return to the Millennium Green where the Trustees of the Green are organising an afternoon Band Concert and picnic.

On Thursday 7 June the Memory Cafe will be organising a tea party at the Methodist Church for its members.

Saturday 9 June is the Queen’s official birthday and the Town Council is organising a concert of local talent. St Paul’s church has kindly donated the venue and all the acts are giving their time for free to ensure that this concert can be made free of charge to those who wish to attend. Tickets will be available shortly.

At the end of the month – on 29 and 30 June – Honiton will once again be holding its own Armed Forces Day and this year the event will have a Jubilee theme.

Posters will up around the town with full details of all the events and more infomration will be placed here on honiton.com – and in case you miss them, the Town Crier will be in town for three Saturdays to remind everyone of what’s coming up.

12-year-old gymnasts bring back international medals to Honiton

Buster and Ash with their Medals

Honiton Gym Club’s Ashley Wallis and Buster Tutcher have returned from the Flanders International Acro Cup in Belgium clutching bronze medals.

The two 12-year olds, who train four times per week in Honiton, achieved their feat just a few weeks after winning another bronze medal at the British Championships in Stoke on Trent.

Ashley, a pupil at Honiton Community College, said: “It was really exciting, because it was the first time we have competed in another country. We did good routines, and our coaches Helen and James said that it was the best they’ve seen us do. If we keep training hard I think we can get higher scores and do even better in our next competitions.”

Buster and Ashley compete in the 11-16 boys’ pair category of acrobatic gymnastics, which is the entry level for international competitions in their sport. Buster, the base, throws Ashley in the air for somersaults, and Ashley also balances on one hand on Buster’s head. They join their moves together with tumbling elements and choreography.

And Buster and Ashley weren’t the only ones who made Honiton proud. 22 gymnasts represented the club in Belgium – the biggest delegation the club has taken to an international competition – with two more partnerships making the finals in their events. Charlotte Beviss and Megan Moore made the final of the 11-16 girls’ pair event, and Mylissa Jones, Charlie Hartland and Danni Hartland reached the final of the 11-16 girls’ trio event.

High performance coach James Reddy said: “It was an achievement in itself to take such a big delegation to Belgium. All of our gymnasts had to reach a high standard to compete in the 11-16 age group, so enormous credit goes to our team of coaches who’ve prepared them. The level of acrobatic gymnastics in Honiton has improved enormously over the past 12 months.”

Other gymnasts who represented the club at the Flanders International Acro Competition were: Rosie Lyus, Saffy Herbert, Rachel Palfrey, Georgia Rooke, Kaisha Dessalines-Wright, Alice Hewstone, Becky Fullard, Becky Lawrence, Megan Cross, Faye Miles, Michaela Jones, Charlotte Bowen, Jess Iley, Jes Kennaway, and Valentine Tutcher. Gymnasts from Ivybridge Community College also joined Honiton’s gymnasts on the trip.

Honiton’s elite also got the chance while they were in Belgium to learn from some of the best senior gymnasts in the world, as the acrobatics world cup was taking place at the same time.
